Charged with a Federal criminal offense? What happens next?

If you are charged with a white collar crime, you will have the opportunity to “walk-in.” You will be noticed in advance to come to court on a certain date, and you will be processed twice. First, you will be processed by marshals in the court house and second by the underlying law enforcement investigative agency. Different law enforcement investigative agencies include the treasury department, the FBI, and others depending on the crime that was committed.

When you are processed, they will take your photograph, fingerprints, DNA swab, pedigree information, and a urine sample. You will also have an interview with pretrial services where they will ask you questions about your family, finances, property, personal circumstance, etc. with which they will make a recommendation for your release. Pretrial services are really looking for your ties to the community and whether there are reasons to think you will reoffend if you are released prior to trial. They also want to know if you are to be trusted to come back to court, if you are doing drugs, and if you have a criminal history.
