New Jersey’s Governor Suggests Expungements for Nonviolent Offenders: An Experienced NJ Criminal Lawyer Can Help

New Jersey Criminal Lawyers Schwartz Posnock

Do you still have a criminal record because of that minor mistake you made as a thrill-seeking youngster? New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie, is on your side! The governor is planning to work with New Jersey lawmakers by the June 30 end of the current budget year to aid former non-violent offenders in expunging their criminal records.

Sandra Cunningham, a State Senator, proposed that: “if a person has not created a problem, had any problem with the law, in 10 years or more, I think that their record should be expunged automatically.” She reasons that numerous individuals get into trouble when they are young. She argues that ten years is enough time for people to turn their lives around and make better decisions.

Christie’s mission would enhance the well-being of many state residents. Merchantville resident, Gary Meyer, would like to see this legislation passed. His record has been clean since he was convicted of a drug offense in 1992, but his employment opportunities are hindered because of his inability to expunge his criminal record. Meyer’s said: “I graduated in the top 5 percent of my class at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. I speak four languages, I do own a technology company, and I’m precluded from getting any kind of professional licensing at this point. I can’t even be a cashier at the CVS.”
